Our PhD Degree Programmes


Accounting

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Accounting, ATU Faculty of Management and Accounting. This programme aims to train highly-educated individuals in the field of accounting in a way that they acquire an analytical view toward the underpinning theories and major practices of this field. Students of accounting at this level will be able, and are required, to analyze and critically study the trending frameworks and theories of accounting and other related areas, and they will be equipped with the knowledge to devise and modify accounting theories and practices.


Arabic Language and Literature

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Arabic Language and Literature, ATU Faculty of Persian Literature and Foreign Languages. It includes instruction in philology, Classical Arabic, Modern Standard Arabic, dialects etc. Students at this level zoom in on specific and detailed aspects of the Arabic Language and Literature such as specific literary eras, genres, figures, theories etc. Moreover, students will be given the opportunity to study this particular language and literature deeply in relation with other major fields of knowledge such as philosophy, psychology, sociology etc.


Business Management (Organizational Behavior and Human Resources Management, Marketing Management, Business Policy)

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Business Management, ATU Faculty of Management and Accounting. Students at this level deal with the principles and theories underlying various trends of management in the world of business. The main aim of this programme is to teach the main theories of business management, critically analyze current doctrines and practices in this field, and strive to devise and enhance framework of theory and practice in the scope of grand corporations, stand-alone businesses, or international enterprises. The focus of this programme is mostly on organizational, structural, and resource management of businesses.


Commercial Management (Organizational Behavior and Human Resources Management, Marketing Management, Commercial Policy of Management)

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Business Management, ATU Faculty of Management and Accounting. Students at this level are deal with the theories and underlying theoretical trends of commerce and commercial management in the world of business and economics. In comparison with the PhD programme of Business Management, individuals of this field are mainly concerned with the foundations and structures of commerce, trade, marketing etc.


Communication Sciences

This major is offered at the PhD level at ATU Faculty of Communication Sciences. As with other PhD programmes, this major teaches individuals about the theories, foundations, and latest trends of communication sciences and industries. Students of this programme look at communication from a scientific point of view, and their aim is to study, analyze, criticize, and improve principles of human communication, high-tech means of communication, related aspects of technology and communication systems, psychosocial theories, etc.


Comparative Philosophy

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Philosophy at ATU Faculty of Theology and Islamic Knowledge. This major, sometimes called “cross-cultural philosophy”, is a specific subfield of philosophy in which philosophers work on problems by intentionally setting into dialogue contexts from various cultural, linguistic, and philosophical streams. Focusing other major schools of philosophy and thought in the studying of certain subjects and aspects of human life, this programme is aimed to compare and contrast the frameworks, viewpoints, scopes and approaches of different philosophical vantage points with each other. Individuals are required to, first, analyze each school of thought with highly critical perspectives and, through deep contemplation in the structures of different schools, and second, gain a more comprehensive understanding of the collective human philosophy.


Counseling

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Counseling, ATU Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. This programme focuses on the scientific study of individual and collective behavior, the physical and environmental bases of behavior, and the analysis and treatment of behavioral problems and disorders. More than delving into practical aspects of counseling, students of this programme will gain a deeper understanding of counseling practices, and will be able to theorize and devise frameworks for future practitioners and, based on the scientific study of human brain, psyche, and behavior, improve and enhance the overall quality of counseling practices with novel methods and approaches.


Criminal Law and Criminology

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology, ATU Faculty of Law and Political Sciences. This programme prepares individuals to apply theories and practices of organization management and criminal justice to the administration of public law enforcement agencies and operations. The main aim of the students of this programme is to study and enhance, if necessary, various systems of criminal law. Moreover, they accumulate knowledge in the field of criminology, study the theories and practices of this field, and contribute to the improvement of methods and techniques of studying this subject.


Curriculum Studies

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Educational Planning, ATU Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. The main goal of this programme is to train knowledgeable experts who can contribute to the improvement of educational curriculums of different fields. Individuals of this field are, therefore, required to critically study, modify, and improve various aspects of educational curriculums. Student in-depth need analysis, educational policies, national and international educational curricula etc. are among various subjects covered in this programme.


Econometrics

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Energy Economics, ATU Faculty of Economics. This major applies mathematical and statistical techniques to the analysis of business and economic data. The impact of information technology has meant that there are huge data sets now available, such as data sets of financial market activity or of consumer markets via supermarket scanning. This adds considerably to the high-level prospects for graduates with the quantitative skills to deal with the potential of the data, such as in the analysis of energy demand, international trade flows, business and commercial trends, consumer behavior etc.


Economic Sciences

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Theoretical Economics, ATU Faculty of Economics. This programme trains students to use economic concepts to better understand management, commercial, marketing, labor, and finance issues. Students mainly focus on economic theories and foundations, current academic practices in the field of economics, and their effects on various aspects and systems of human life etc.


Economic Sciences (Islamic Economics)

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Theoretical Economics, ATU Faculty of Economics. This programme trains students in the understanding of management, commercial, marketing, labor, and finance issues in an economic context based on the teaching of economic systems in Islam and the frameworks defined by notable Islamic figures. Students also study and analyze the opportunities and boundaries set by Islam with regard to banking systems, economic machines, business and commercial practices, etc.


Educational Administration

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Educational Planning, ATU Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. This programme prepares individuals to plan, supervise, and manage educational organizations, institutes, and programmes. It includes instruction in grand education theories and major practices, programme development, evaluation and assessment in education, managing individual education plans, education curricula, personnel management, budgeting, and professional standards and ethics.


Educational Planning

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Educational Planning, ATU Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. This programme aims to teach how to survey educational demographic needs and plan for them accordingly. It focuses on explaining largely the academic standards required for any given society, the opportunities and challenges related to this landscape, and the theories and practical means of achieving long-term educational goals for a community. It includes details on how to plan for quality educational programmes and provide the necessary academic instruction and support for members of a society.


Educational Psychology

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Psychometrics and Educational Psychology, ATU Faculty of Psychology and Educational Science. This major focuses on the application of psychology to the study of the behavior of individuals in the roles of teachers and learners, the theories and underpinning concepts of psychology in the educational environment, the nature and effects of learning environments, the psychological effects of teaching methods and approaches, learning theories, human cognition and intellectual development, and psychological evaluation.


Educational Technology

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Educational Technology, ATU Faculty of Psychology and Educational Science. This programme focuses on integrating technology into educational practices and curricula. It includes instruction in foundations of educational technology, computer applications, utilizing technology for assessment, multimedia instruction, web-based instruction, distance education, and designing and producing educational software and materials. Students also study the theoretical aspects of implementing technology into education and its implications for future educational experts and professionals.


Financial Economics

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Theoretical Economics, ATU Faculty of Economics. The financial economics major is designed for students who are interested in both economics and finance. The objective is to prepare students to apply principles in economics and financial analysis in order to understand the functions of economic systems, critically analyze the theories of financing, and create novel foundations for improving the economic systems of the business world.


Financial Management

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Business management, ATU Faculty of Management and Accounting. This course is offered to those who plan to enter the banking and finance industry as experts who can analyze financial systems and trends, follow fiscal tendencies, predict money flows, and theorize effective frameworks and models for financial management. The programme aims to help students acquire analytic skills, perception, and competencies necessary for sound financial decision making in the business world.


General Linguistics

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Linguistics, ATU Faculty of Persian Literature and Foreign Languages. This course deals with theory formation for linguistics. Its areas of interest and application are multi-disciplinary, consequently, it can contribute to language teaching enterprise, translation studies and theories, language acquisition and learning, discourse studies, sociolinguistics, etc. The main aim of this programme is to explore, explain, and define language structures and the necessary theories and approaches in understanding languages and language components.


General Psychology

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of General and Clinical Psychology, ATU Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. This programme focuses on the scientific study of individual and collective behavior, the human mind and its functions, the analysis of human cognition, interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships, etc. The main aim of such studies at the PhD level is to contribute to the theories and practices of Psychology in order to better understand the human mind and psyche.


Higher Education Administration

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Educational Planning, Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. Students in this major learn how to lead and run colleges, universities, and other places of higher education. They also learn how to conduct research. Subjects of interest cover a wide range of educational topics, such as student services, educational planning and human resources, as well as areas specific to financial issues, such as budget management and monitoring.


Information Technology Management

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Industrial Management, Faculty of Management and Accounting. This programme focuses on the establishment, maintenance, and monitoring of information systems in various organizations. Students focus on the principles of information transfer, gathering and sharing in inter-organizational and intra-organizational contexts. Candidates will also study current frameworks and practices in their specialized field and seek to devise more modern and enhanced theories in various aspects regarding information technology.


Instructional Technology

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Education, ATU Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. It seeks to teach individuals how to plan, develop, evaluate and manage the instructional processes effectively to ensure improved performance by learners as a result of implementing technology and technological tools in the learning context. Its goal is to understand how people learn through exposure to or use appropriate learning technology. Instructional technologists are today's problem solvers. They look to understand performance problems and design solutions to those problems.


International Economics

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Commercial Economics, Faculty of Economics. This major is grounded in the belief that economic analysis is essential to the understanding of modern world affairs. Students are, therefore, mainly involved in studying and analyzing current trends and frameworks of international economics, the history of international interactions in the fields of commerce and economics, and the theories and rationales which provide the driving force behind global economic activities.


International Relations

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of International Relations, Faculty of Law and Political Sciences. This programme focuses on the systematic study of international politics and institutions, the conduct of diplomacy and foreign policy, and the overall analysis of cross-country collaborations and interactions. It includes instruction in international relations theory, foreign policy analysis, international law and organization, the comparative study of specific countries and regions, and the theory and practice of diplomacy.


Islamic Economics

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Theoretical Economics, Faculty of Economics. This major seeks to develop a viewpoint in students, which serves to help them analyze and study Economics and financial concepts from a viewpoint that arises from the teachings of Islam and notable Islamic figures. Students focus on various trends and practices of economic nature and apply critical thinking to these concepts within the framework of Islamic foundations.


Islamic Knowledge Teacher Training (The Islamic Revolution of Iran, Theoretical Foundations of Islam)

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Islamic Studies, Faculty of Theology and Islamic Knowledge. This course is taught as an interdisciplinary subject alongside other professional courses. Like other religious institutions, Islamic colleges regard Islamic values and norms as important features to be implemented into the development processes of trainee teachers. With this view in mind, this programme focuses mainly on applying teaching of Islam and notable Islamic scholars into the teaching and development processes of future teachers.


Islamic Philosophy and Discourse

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Islamic Studies, Faculty of Theology and Islamic Knowledge. The main focus of this programme is to study, analyze and critically develop schools of philosophy from the viewpoint of Islam. Also, this programme focuses on how discourse and interpersonal interactions in any given society play out in the underpinning theories and mindsets of human life.


Management (Operations Research, Production and Operations, Financial Management, Information Technology Management)

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Industrial Management, ATU Faculty of Management and Accounting. This major prepares students for accurate management and decision making in critical situations under one of the subcategories of Operations Research, Production and Operations, Financial Management, Information Technology Management. The area of interest in this programme is broad; students work on various subjects and subfields and become highly knowledgeable of various theories, practices and trends of management and administration.


Assessment (Psychometrics)

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Psychometrics and Educational Psychology, Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. This major focuses on the mathematical and statistical procedures used in psychological test construction and validation, general problems of measurement of behavior, and the application of quantitative methods to research design and other methodological topics in order to collect and analyze data about a person or a group of people in terms of their learning, behavior, psychological health, ability, tendencies, etc.


Monetary Economics

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Theoretical Economics, Faculty of Economics. The programme analyzes policy issues for the world's major central banks and financial regulators, studies various common practices and interactions among major financial organizations, and compiles and disseminates statistics. Students in this field can go on to enter professional careers as economists, statisticians, research analysts, business analysts and administrative assistants.


Operations Research

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Public Administration, Faculty of Management and Accounting. This major aims to teach students how to create novel ways of solving problems and defining operation procedures of various kind by implementing mathematical procedures, managing various resources, and making use of technological tools and facilities. Students learn advanced mathematical modeling and statistics and gain an understanding of how to recognize, explore, and handle various logistical issues.


Persian Language and Literature

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Persian Language and Literature, Faculty of Persian Literature and Foreign Languages. This major offers courses for students fascinated with Persian poetry, prose, and literary creations in vast diversity. It focuses on the literature used in ancient, medieval, and modern Iran and its border regions, including modern Persian and Old Persian. Students also strive to explore the Persian language and literature from various aspects.


Petroleum Economics (Law and Contracts, Finance and Markets)

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Energy Economics, Faculty of Economics. This major fills a clear gap in the educational and training needs of the upstream (exploration and production) petroleum industry. It is primarily aimed at petro-technical professionals (e.g. geoscientists or engineers) who are currently working, or who hope to work, in the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry (e.g. with operator companies, service companies, national oil companies, etc.). It is designed to equip candidates with the key skills and knowledge required for project and asset management positions. A second target group is candidates (either within exploration and production companies, or external to them) who desire to understand the tools and processes used to evaluate and manage hydrocarbon projects or assets.


Philosophy

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Theology and Islamic Knowledge. This programme focuses on ideologies and their logical structure, including arguments and investigations about abstract and real phenomena. It includes instruction in logic, ethics, aesthetics, epistemology, metaphysics, symbolism, and history of philosophy, and applications of Philosophy to the theoretical foundations and methods of other disciplines. Student study various schools of thought and learn to analyze and critically explore different systems and structures of the human life from numerous viewpoints.


Philosophy of Art

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Theology and Islamic Knowledge. As the name suggests, students work in the area of arts with a focus on its role in human life, the underpinning theories and rationales for its creation, and the meanings and effects it has in human life.


Philosophy of Education

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Education, ATU Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. This major focuses on individual needs, fundamental theories, contemporary relevance, and the necessity and rationales behind education. Students and teachers work together on determining why should humans learn, what should be learned, how best to learn it, and how to apply learning to the betterment of human societies.


Philosophy of Islamic Economics

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Theoretical Economics, Faculty of Economics. The main focus of this programme is on the viewpoints of Islamic thought toward the fundamentals of economics, the reasons for its existence, the needs and frameworks for its regulation, etc. Students deeply study and critically analyze various aspects of economic systems from the viewpoint of Islamic knowledge.


Philosophy of Islamic Education

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Education and Philosophy of Education in Islam, Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. This major looks at the principles and concepts underlying education in Islam, critically analyzes these notions, deconstructs the existing educational infrastructures, and strives to produce new concepts. Islamic Education is seeking to understand the distinct role of the human beings in the formation and construction of human life.


Political Sciences (Political Thoughts, Political Sociology, Iran's Issues)

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Political Sciences, Faculty of Law and Political Sciences. This major instructs students in political philosophy, political theory, comparative government and politics, political parties and interest groups, public opinion, political research methods, analysis of government and politics of specific countries, and studies of specific political institutions and processes. Students study, understand, and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of various political schools of thought and learn about the current trends of politics within and between countries.


Private Law

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Private and Commercial Law, Faculty of Law and Political Sciences. Its focus is on law in human societies and between people. Individuals in this field will be familiarized with the rules and conventions of judiciary systems with regard to the legal interactions between individuals, such as contracts, labor agreements, sales and purchases, etc.


Psychology (Education of Exceptional Children)

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Departments of Psychology of Exceptional Children, Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. This major instructs individuals in various topics and subtopics related to teaching exceptional children. Students learn about various psychological challenges for children with exceptional needs, study numerous methods and principles of teaching to such a population, and work on the needs analysis of these children.


Public Administration (Public Policy, Human Resources Management)

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Public Administration, Faculty of Management and Accounting. This major prepares individuals to serve as managers in the executive arm of local or national governmental organizations and focuses on the systematic study of executive organization and management. It includes instruction in the roles, development, and principles of public administration, management of public policy, executive-legislative relations, public budgetary processes and financial management, administrative law, human resources management, professional ethics etc.


Public and International Law

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Public and International Law, Faculty of Law and Political Sciences. This major, in its basic form, is concerned about relations between countries and their citizens. It is a vast topic and covers areas, such as international human rights law, developed from the principles defined by the UN, armed conflict, environmental law, trade law, law of the seas and international arbitration. Students study various national and international judicial systems as well as frameworks of international relations and interactions.


Public Law

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Public and International Law, Faculty of Law and Political Sciences. This major is an interdisciplinary programme in which students learn and practice methods and modes of thinking required to understand and become actively engaged in the analysis of legal and public judicial policy issues. Grounded in the liberal arts, the programme provides students with the tools of analysis in social sciences, law, and other fields of the humanities needed to understand the substance of public policy concerns. The programme aims to investigate the effect and role of law and judiciary systems in the formation and continuation of human societies.


Public Sector Economics

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Commercial Economics, Faculty of Economics. As the name suggests, this programme mainly revolves around the field of Economics in the public sector. Students study the public sector of economic and financial systems in various contexts. Their studies include share holdings, public sector versus private sector, governmental administration of economics, etc.

Qur'an Sciences and Hadith

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Qur'an Sciences and Hadith, Faculty of Theology and Islamic Knowledge. The main focus of this programme is exploring and explaining the teachings of Islam through Hadith, teachings left by Islamic leaders, especially the Prophet and the Imams. Students will acquire a thorough and scientific understanding of Qur'anic studies, Hadith studies, and what is left from the teachings of key figures in the history of the Islamic world.


Social Welfare

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Social Welfare, Faculty Social Sciences. This programme focuses on the general study of human social living conditions, human life needs and resources, and how social institutions, governmental or otherwise can maintain standard living conditions and provide services to the general public. Students will study subjects, such as the history of social welfare, social classes, social welfare institutions and practices, social welfare legal framework, etc.


Social Work

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Social Work, Faculty of Social Sciences. This programme aims at preparing individuals for the professional practice of social welfare administration and counseling. It focuses on the study of organized means of providing basic support services for vulnerable individuals and groups. It includes instruction in social welfare policy, case work planning, social counseling and intervention strategies, administrative procedures and regulations as well as specific applications in areas, such as child and family services, probation, employment services, disability counseling, etc.


Sociology (Political Sociology, Cultural Sociology)

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Social Research, Faculty of Social Sciences. This programme focuses on the systematic study of human social institutions and social relationships. It includes instruction in social theory, sociological research methods, social organization and structure, social stratification and hierarchies, dynamics of social change, family structures, social deviance and control, and applications to the study of specific social groups, social institutions, and social problems.


Sports Management

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Management and Planning in Physical Education, Faculty of Physical Education and Sports Sciences. This programme prepares individuals to apply business, coaching and physical education principles to the organization, administration and management of athletic programmes and teams, fitness/rehabilitation facilities and health clubs, sport recreation services, and related services. It includes instruction in sports institutions establishment and development, principles of economic management, sales, marketing and recruitment, event promotion and scheduling, sports facilities management, public relations, legal aspects of sports, and applicable health and safety standards.


Statistics

This major is offered at the PhD level at ATU Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Sciences. This programme focuses on the application of statistics to the analysis and solution of educational research problems, and the development of technical designs for research studies. It includes instruction in mathematical statistics, research design, computer applications, instrument design, research methodologies, and applications to research problems in specific education subjects.


Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of English Language and Literature, Faculty of Persian Literature and Foreign Languages. This programme is designed to prepare Applied Linguists and English language teachers and researchers. Students can either carry on with their studies into higher academic levels or enter a professional career as a highly qualified English teacher or English teacher trainer. The curriculum, taught by expert faculty members with years of experience in the field, focuses on various aspects of Applied Linguistics and English language teaching, such as language skills, language components, linguistics, sociolinguistics, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), academic writing, discourse, and pragmatics, etc.


Technology Management

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Industrial Management, Faculty of Management and Accounting. This major is programmed to train students in information technology management theories and rationale, systems development, business strategy, establishment and maintenance of information systems, etc. A technology manager helps businesses utilize available technology and determines the technological strategies which will best suit the needs of an organization. Additionally, a technology manager oversees the work of technical professionals to ensure a reliable, productive work environment for clients and employers.


Tourism Management

This major is offered at the PhD level in the Department of Tourism Management, Faculty of Management and Accounting. This programme prepares individuals to manage travel-related enterprises and related convention and/or tourist services. It includes instruction in travel agency management, tour arranging and planning, convention and event planning, travel industry operations and procedures, tourism marketing and promotion strategies, travel counseling, travel industry law, international and domestic operations, and travel and tourism policy.


Translation Studies

This major is offered at the PhD level at ATU Faculty of Persian Literature and Foreign Languages. This major caters to the increasing need for highly skilled and specialist translators across a wide range of industries and settings. The objectives of this programme are to provide an excellent platform to become a professional translator and to study various theories, methodologies, principles and practices of the profession of translation.
